VS.

So which one do you think is better? Personally I prefer Fring’s functionality, but Yeigo looks better. Do you go for looks or function?

What are these services? Basically they are voIP services that allow you to make a data connection another cellphone which in turn enables you to ‘call’ that cellphone, provided that the destination cellphone has the said software installed on it. So mommy & daddy have Yeigo installed on their handsets which enables them to talk to each other without running up any voice call costs. This is an especially attractive option now that Vodacom’s internet rates have been cut by 61%.

Thing is, which one do you choose?

Yeigo:

  1. Free data calls between Yeigo installed handsets.
  2. Savings on normal calls (Landlines or cell) ‘anywhere’ in the world
  3. Send Cheap SMS messages to ‘any’ destination with cost savings of up to 90%.
  4. “In later releases, you will be able to send free SMS messages to other people also using Yeigo.”
  5. Rates.

Fring:

  1. Talk and chat totally free over Wi-Fi
  2. Savings on normal calls ‘anywhere’ in the world. (Using SkypeOut or SIP)
  3. Connect to skype and call your skype contacts free.
  4. Rates

I do doubt that any of these services offer truly global coverage relating to their SMS services. Being in the industry myself, I know that the above uses of ‘anywhere in the world’ is preposterous.

Either way, I have both installed of my phone, thus far only Fring has come in handy and I have used Fring because of its functionality to call Skype users. Perhaps Yeigo should look into this?

What do you guys think?

According to this article Yeigo are to be the Skype of mobile?!?!? Why on earth would they want to do this when they can use Skype’s client base to extend their own? This is where Fring is superior to yeigo.

UPDATE

Woops, never saw this. Tyler already die a round on the mobile VOIP apps.

At the end of the day it sort of boils down to having multiple ID’s for various systems. I don’t want a mxit, skype, MSN, etc etc account, I want ONE login. That’s what makes Fring attractive – that I don’t need to push a sign up from my contacts as they are already on skype.

Maybe there is still some space for OpenID to move into mobile?

Prezactly, I forgot to mention that fring also integrates with MSN and if I am not mistaken, with Gtalk as well.

I actually need to get a phone that run either of those apps. :/

Eh, I am running both on an N73 and for some reason it does not work on 3G, only on GPRS. So kinda kak at the moment.

Fring also works on some symbian phones that yeigo doesn’t (i.e. Sony Ericssons UIQ3 based phones)

I vote for Yeigo :)

Stefano to add to your comment above “I forgot to mention that fring also integrates with MSN”
fring supports : Skype, MSN, GoogleTalk, ICQ, Twitter and SIP.

“which one do you choose?” lol
Most people have multiple VoIP accounts these days.

Instead of competing MVoIP networks should be working together;-)

Yeigo wins for me, probably because I’m looking for a software that helps me make cheap VoIP calls from my mobile. Skype, MSN, chat, poke, this, and that are not a priority when I’m using my mobile.

Ideal scenario would be an “Internet Call” button directly integrated with my phone’s contact list but Nokia shamefully removed this amazing feature in their new phones due to operator pressure.

Yeigo wins because it is simpler and focused. Fring loses because it has a million useless bells and whistles, all of which are vampires to battery life.

Er… that should read “shamelessly” not “shamefully”.
